The (dis)comfort of Jesus' words

Writing about Jesus telling the rich young ruler to sell all he had, and give it to the poor, and then come follow Him, David Platt writes: 'If Mark 10 teaches anything, it teaches us that Jesus does sometimes call people to sell everything they have and give it to the poor. This means he might call you or me to do this. I love the way one writer put it. He wrote, "That Jesus did not command all his followers to sell their possessions gives comfort only to the kind of people to whom he would issue that command."' [David Platt, Radical, 120]

So, if Jesus' words cause us as much discomfort as they did the rich young ruler, and we're glad He doesn't say the same to us, what makes us think He wouldn't?
